Nothing much to see here, folks. Just a red haired girl with glasses starting a blog. Yep, that’s right. I am a real redhead and I wear glasses. Lol! For a long time, this is how I have been described by a lot of different people. So, I thought that would make an interesting name for my blog site. And… voila! Here it is!
I’m sure you are wondering, ‘who are you?’ Well, for starters, my name is Rebecca/Becky/hey you/mom/honey/sweetheart and a few other things I probably shouldn’t post here. (Lol! ‘Bout the same for most of us, I guess.) Not really anyone special most of the time but, for certain, I am a wife to a wonderful husband. I am a daughter to loving parents. I am a mom of two sons whom I love very much. And I have lots of amazing, supportive friends for whom I am very thankful as well. I live in the beautiful Appalachian mountains of Tennessee and am a mountain girl at heart! (Did I mention that I LOVE the mountains?) And, FYI, the priority level of who or what I love may vary from day to day. (Lol!)
I have recently (early 2024) “retired” due to becoming legally blind. So, now I guess I could technically say I’m that “red haired blind girl with glasses,” but the title of my blog was long enough already. (And, yes, you can laugh at that because I certainly do!) I stay busy with my small garden (veggies, herbs and flowers), as well as junk-cycling, crafting and learning about herbalism. I LOVE to cook about as much as I LOVE the mountains. (Did I mention that I LOVE the mountains? And that I LOVE to cook?) I also love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy playing card games, board games and word games. I figure staying busy is a good thing so I don’t go crazy(er) or end up lounging on the couch in my robe, watching trashy tv and eating bon-bons all day. (Lol!)
Additionally, while I was completing my BSBA degree (UTM 2020), I was often told that my writing was good and that I should write more. Although it has been a few years since I graduated, I still enjoy writing, but most of it has been shorter materials, notes, documents, etc. So, while I am sharing and”gathering my thoughts,” I will also be re-honing my writing skills as well. You know… things like trying to remember where commas go, when to use “who” or “whom,” using correct tense/person in a statement, etc.
Similarly, I have also wanted to write a book for some time and feel this may be a good way to get going on the proverbial “bucket list-write a book” idea. I have read other writers’ blogs, posts and stories about how they started with a blog and turned it into a book, so I figure I will give it a try as well. I am still toying with the idea of writing a book, what it will be about, etc… kind of like a cat pawing at a catnip-filled toy mouse. But, at some point, much like the cat, I will either get bored playing with the idea and move on to something else that catches my attention… or I’ll attack it full force and get the book written and published. Time will tell.
Mostly I will share silly, funny, sad, inspiring and thought-provoking stories of events, activities and who knows what else that I may or may not have experienced. Sometimes I may share my random, off-the-wall, out of left field, 2 a.m. “can’t get to sleep” thoughts. Sometimes I may share a recipe I love. Sometimes I may share a “nugget” of knowledge that I’ve just recently learned. Some of the stories may be true while others may be fictional. It’s going to be a grab bag of options and topics, folks. Remember, grab bag means you never know what you’re going to get but you usually get your money’s worth. lol! (Yes, embarrassing family stories always make great material too. So, if you are a relative or friend, I will probably change the names and some other information to protect the “innocent” or the “guilty” so I don’t get disowned by everyone. lol!)
Finally, and rather important to me, for most of my adult life I have been involved in advocacy for people with disabilities of some sort. Some are family members but others were friends or acquaintances. I had to learn to advocate for my family and that carried over into advocating for others. Sometimes I would just root for them from the sidelines, but other times I would get in the game and be an active participant. So, yes, some of my posts will certainly talk about advocating for people with disabilities. And, now that I am having to learn to advocate for myself, it is even more important than ever to me. It hits a little closer to home when it’s you or your family, as is the case with most things.
So, now that all of this has been thrown out there, what do you think? I hope you’ll come back to see what you might find. My goal is to post new content monthly (at the very least) but hopefully I’ll get better and get more stories out more often. As I go, I will learn more about blogging, designing my site, etc. and the view will update and change as I go. I will also do my best to keep the site current and organized by topic. Some posts may fall under a couple different areas but, as I mentioned earlier, I am new to blogging and am learning “on the fly!” What better way to learn something new, right? (Only if you’re a hardheaded redhead. Lol!) Thanks for being patient; we’ll work through this together.
Oh, and I will give credit where credit is due. I am learning about blogging from theblogstarter.com. Scott Chow has some good basic instructions, tutorials and, often times, discounts for BluleHost and WordPress. Check it out if you think you want to start a blog too.
Thanks for taking a minute to stop in! For better or for worse, more will be coming soon! (Lol!)
Take care!
Rebecca
